HAZARDOUS MATERIALS CERTIFICATION
Hazardous Materials certification is granted to those
individuals who meet the required qualifications and successfully pass the
certification exam. The
requirements for Awareness and Operations and Technician levels are based on
NFPA 472, 2002 and 29CFR1910.120(q). No
individual shall attain higher hazardous materials certification without first
completing Hazardous Materials Awareness level, followed by Operations level and
lastly Technician level.
Course
of Instruction:
Hazardous
Materials Awareness course can be completed by one of two
methods.
- The
first method is by attending an 8 hour classroom session held at different
locations in Taney County. The
course uses the University of Missouri – Fire & Rescue Training
Institute course curriculum. This
course is a lecture based class with powerpoint audio visual aids.
A student manual and the “Emergency Response Guide” is provided
to each student. A completion certificate is issued by the Taney County
Local Emergency Planning Committee.
The second method is to take this course on the web at
the University of Missouri – Fire & Rescue Training Institute’s web
page. There is a required course
test at the end of the instruction. When
this test is passed a certificate is issued.

Awareness Certification

- Certification as Hazardous Materials – Awareness level will be issued by
the Division of Fire Safety to those individuals who have met the following
guidelines and provided documentation verifying:

Completed “Hazardous Materials Certification Application”
(see training officer)
- q
Completed “Authorization for Release of Information” (see
training officer)
- q
Successful completion of a qualified Hazardous Materials
Initial Response: Awareness training course.

Applicant must be a resident of Missouri, or employed within
the State.

Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
- q
Applicant must possess a valid Missouri driver’s license
- Applicant must attain a score of 70% on the state
certification written exam.
